Skull Bones Mnemonic (Cranial and Facial Bones) | Anatomy and Physiology

joints No Comments »

The human skull bones can be tricky to learn at first in your anatomy and physiology class, but these mnemonics will help you learn the 8 cranial bones and 14 facial bones, for a total of 22 skull bones. I also cover associated bones in the skull, such as the hyoid bone and the auditory ossicles (ear bones).

Here’s a neat trick about the skull bones: the 8 cranial bones are all single, except for two pairs of bones (parietal and temporal). The 14 facial bones are all pairs of bones, except for two single ones (vomer and mandible).

Here are the eight cranial bones, with a mnemonic (memory trick) to help you remember them:

-Ethmoid bone (1)
-Frontal bone (1)
-Sphenoid bone (1)
-Parietal bones (2)
-Temporal bones (2)
Occipital bone (1)

To remember them, remember this phrase (make it into a cranial bones song if you want): Ethan’s Fried Spanish Pasta Tempted Octavia.

The fourteen facial bones may seem even more daunting, but these mostly come in pairs, so there aren’t as many as it seems.

-Mandible (1)
-Vomer (1)
-Maxilla (2)
-Lacrimal bones (2)
-Nasal bones (2)
-Inferior Nasal Concha (2)
-Palatine bones (2)
-Zygomatic bones (2)

Here’s a mnemonic sentence (or song) to help you remember the 14 facial bones: My Mouth’s Palate Never Likes Zucchini In Vinegar.

The skull bones, or cranial bones, and their sutures can be remembered using a simple mnemonic trick in this anatomy animation!

The skull bones consist of cranial bones and facial bones connected by sutures. The cranial bone mnemonic in the video will help you remember the skull anatomy, landmarks, and locations of each bone. The cranial bones include the ethmoid bone, occipital bone, 2 parietal bones, frontal bone, 2 temporal bones, and sphenoid bone.

The cranial bones make up the cranium that surround and protect the brain. This animation will walk you through the anatomy and important features of each cranial bone and the sutures that connect them.
